Health Equity Award

The Department of Pediatrics Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion is requesting proposals focused on advancing the health, wellness, and thriving of the children seen at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, as well as their families and communities. Proposals must focus on topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion generally and specifically must demonstrate how results from their work will directly advance health equity for our patients, their families and communities. Proposals must also focus specifically on promoting health equity for groups experiencing a high burden of health and healthcare disparities including children and families identifying as racial and ethnic minorities, non-English speaking, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and other historically marginalized groups. We invite proposals that span the spectrum of inquiry including basic science, clinical research, community partnered research, as well as research on health services and populations. We also invite scholarly work focused on education, advocacy, and quality improvement. We strongly encourage proposals which directly work with community-based organizations to co-create science and are available to help pair applicants with community partners.

Eligibility and budget

This award is available to any faculty, fellows, or post-doctoral scholars at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Other individuals may be involved as co-investigators, consultants, or community partners but the primary investigator must be a fellow, faculty, or post-doctoral scholar at CHP. Residents and medical students should reach out to Maya Ragavan (ragavanm@chp.edu) to discuss other opportunities. Proposals may request between $5,000- $25,000 in direct costs only. Budget may be used for personnel (research assistants, data analysts), materials, consultants, community partner stipends, and equipment. Proposals may request an extra $5,000 if they include non-English speaking participants in their work to ensure they can employ best practices in multilingual research. All post-award management must be supported by the primary investigator’s division or mentor.

Application process

Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis. We request a 1-page letter of intent with a brief overview of the project including significance, objectives, methods, future directions, and total budget requested. We will review the letter of intent and if it falls within scope, you will be invited to complete a full proposal.

A full proposal will include:

  • A 3-4 page proposal with significance, objectives, methods, and future directions. Applications should be 11-point font and 0.5 inch margins.
  • A budget and budget justification
  • A list of team members including the project lead
  • A biosketch or CV for the project lead
  • Letters of support from any community partners or consultants
  • For fellows: a letter of support from their primary mentor that they have the support and resources to complete this project
