Commensality Dinner

Commensality Groups were created to foster camaraderie amongst physicians by providing a space for open conversations and learnings around topics such as cultural competence, cultural sensitivity, and microaggressions as they pertain to the practice of medicine. The groups are meant to help raise awareness of how cultural sensitivity can improve the patient experience and the doctor-patient relationship. The group conversation occurs in the context of dinner that is provided as part of the experience.

"Our Time, Our Space"

During our time together, we will work to create a space that fosters:

  • Openness
  • Curiosity, not judgement
  • Comfortability
  • Respectful dialogue
  • Self-reflection and acknowledgement of growth opportunities

This project is funded jointly by the Beckwith Institute and UPMC Office of the Chief Medical and Science Officer and overseen by Eva M. Szigethy, MD, PhDJennifer I. Berliner, MD; and Cassandra Cooper, Manager, Diversity Learning, UPMC Center for Engagement and Inclusion.
