Snapshot of Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide robust early clinical training with graduated autonomy that enables our fellows to become leaders of interdisciplinary teams in the ED.  During PEM rotation blocks, fellows are paired with individual faculty to develop skills in precepting, team leadership, and efficiency.

Additionally, fellows have 3-4 dedicated shifts paired with a faculty coach, enabling longitudinal feedback and development.  Fellows also have shifts dedicated to developing procedural and point-of-care-ultrasound proficiency.

Sample block schedule for Pediatric Graduate

Sample block schedule for Emergency Medicine Graduate

First Year

First-year fellows receive training in anesthesia, critical care medicine, emergency medical services, toxicology, adult emergency medicine and trauma in addition to core PEM months.

Second Year

Second-year fellows receive further training in anesthesia, adult emergency medicine (including women’s health and burn management), and child abuse.

Third Year

Third-year fellows function in a supervisory role in the pediatric ED during their final training year. Fellows supervise and teach resident & students and autonomously direct patient care and lead the inter-professional ED team with oversight provided indirectly (and directly when needed) by faculty working concurrently in the ED.

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Experience

Our POCUS experience is longitudinal throughout training and begins in the first year of fellowship.

Weekly Educational Conference

Our weekly educational conference provides protected time focused on fellows acquiring a comprehensive PEM fund of knowledge.

Simulation-Based Education

Our outstanding simulation-based education is supported by the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education, and Research (WISER).
