Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Training

The Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship program at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh provides a unique opportunity for fellows to gain extensive experience in a broad range of ultrasound pathologies in the pediatric population.

The curriculum is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles of ultrasound and its applications in the emergency setting broadly, with specific focus in the pediatric setting. Fellows will develop and hone their ultrasound skills primarily in the emergency department at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, a level I trauma center and has an annual volume of more than 80,000 visits. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to scan at five nationally recognized emergency departments within the UPMC network, where they will work alongside adult emergency ultrasound (EUS) fellows and faculty. The fellow will have increasing autonomy during scan shifts as the year progresses, with the first half having significant one on one bedside time with POCUS faculty and increasing teaching responsibilities. The second half will provide the fellow ample opportunity to continue to hone their skills through teaching a variety of learners including medical students, residents, PEM fellows and faculty.

Weekly conference will include image review and didactics. Fellows will gain expertise in common pediatric and general POCUS applications. The fellow will also gain experience in administrative topics such as billing, credentialling and quality assurance. The program includes a comprehensive evaluation process to ensure that fellows are gaining the necessary skills and knowledge to become proficient in point-of-care ultrasound. Fellows will have access to nationally renowned research mentors to assist in the development of their scholarly project.
