Diabetes Clinics

Team members at the Diabetes Clinic include providers, psychologists, social workers, dietitians and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists, formerly known as Certified Diabetes Educators. 

In the 1960s, under the leadership of Dr. Allan Drash, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh pioneered the concept of team as the diabetes care model incorporating nurses to educate children and families with Diabetes. This clinical care model has now become standard of care for children with diabetes throughout the world. 

Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Program 

Established in 2016 and includes fundus photography for retinopathy screen as part of the diabetes clinic visit. 

Diabetes Transition Program

Established in 2016 with philanthropic support, provides clinical care and interactive education group sessions to prepare and assist teens through the transition process to adulthood and transfer to adult care.
