Inpatient Medicine Services

The  Paul C. Gaffney Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) serves as the primary provider for general inpatient pediatric services at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Since its inception in 1978, PHM has evolved to accommodate the growing need for hospitalist services within Pittsburgh and the surrounding tri-state area.

The division cares for more than 5,000 patients admitted to UPMC Children’s annually, representing approximately 25% of total stays. Faculty serve as attending physicians for five acute care teams as well as a 10-bed observation unit, overseeing physicians-in-training as part of patient care delivery. In addition to primary oversight of patients, PHM also provides consultatory services to the subspecialty medical and surgical divisions, often in conjunction with pediatric resident physicians. Several medical subspecialty services utilize PHM as primary providers should their patients require hospital admission — these include Complex Care, Dental Medicine, Medical Genetics, Allergy/Immunology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, and Adolescent Medicine.
