CHP VUE: Vital URiM Experience

4-week clinical immersion elective for 4th year medical students from historically excluded communities in medicine. This elective exposes medical students to Pediatrics and the Pediatric Subspecialties in a quaternary children’s hospital with particular focus on SDOH in conjunction with a concurrent Social Justice curriculum.

I participated in the 2022 CHP VUE at UPMC, and I cannot say enough fantastic things about this program! I also completed the additional components to obtain the Certificate in Social Justice and truly enjoyed the enriching experience. Each day I was exposed to the social justice curriculum and several pediatric subspecialties: including but not limited to pathology, nephrology, emergency medicine, oncology, hematology/oncology, child abuse, neurology, endocrinology, palliative care, allergy/immunology, adolescent and young adult medicine. This elective was life-changing and has since significantly impacted my career trajectory and perspective on how to be a social change advocate as a pediatrician!

Since completing the elective, I have partnered with my medical school to start a Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) Chapter to pursue academia further. From this rotation, I have seen how I can integrate social justice, antiracism, and health equity to provide culturally responsive care. If you can participate in this elective, please go for it! You will gain exposure to an amazing supportive academic family and grow in these four weeks in more ways than you know. I am forever grateful to the UPMC CHP teams I was honored to learn from and work alongside. As a result, I hope my future colleague pediatricians will endeavor to engage in pediatric social justice and health care."
