Combined Anesthesiology-Pediatrics Residency

The University of Pittsburgh Departments of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine are pleased to offer this dual board acceptable opportunity to train in both specialties. At the end of the five-year program, residents will be eligible to become board-certified in both pediatrics and anesthesiology. This rigorous academic program has complete and enthusiastic support from both departments.

This program is ideally suited for the applicant who is dedicated to the care of pediatric patients, but also desires adult anesthesiology experience, which is required for application for anesthesiology board certification. Candidates for this program will most likely have a desire to pursue further training in pediatric critical care, pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric anesthesiology, or pediatric pain medicine. Our residents will be excellent and highly sought out candidates for fellowship programs throughout the country, but note, acceptance to a fellowship program is not guaranteed. Dual certification is not required for entrance to fellowship programs in either pediatric critical care or pediatric anesthesiology. Applicants are expected to have a passion for the care of pediatric patients and will not be deterred by the additional training required.

Combined residents in our departments are afforded the same benefits that anesthesiology and pediatrics residents enjoy. These include a competitive salary, vacation time, meeting time, comprehensive health insurance, a travel and education discretionary account, a separate book fund, and convenient parking. The combined program is in full compliance with ACGME graduate medical trainee duty hours regulations.
