PGY-1 Year
The intern year is focused on caring for patients with acute and chronic illnesses in multiple settings, with appropriate supervision from senior residents and faculty.
These skills are developed through a series of months on the inpatient floors (general and specialty teams), in the primary care setting, as well as in the NICU, newborn nursery, and in the Emergency Department.
PGY-2 Year
The second year is devoted to acquiring additional clinical skills, developing independence, and gaining more experience in leadership and supervision.
Supervisory roles are provided on inpatient services, in both general and specialty teams. New skill sets are developed this year in the NICU, in our state-of-the-art Emergency Department, as well as in our world-renowned PICU. We offer ambulatory experiences in Adolescent Medicine, Child Development and behavioral clinic, as well as our unique Child Advocacy rotation.
The remainder of the year consists of a wide range of electives which allows each resident the opportunity to shape his or her clinical training to concentrate on areas of interest. Residents are encouraged to maintain their academic aspect of practice through quality improvement and scholarly projects.
PGY-3 Year
The third year allows a great deal of time for supervisory experiences on the inpatient general and specialty medical teams, as well as ambulatory care in the primary care center and Emergency Department. There is even dedicated time for residents to develop their teaching skills and enhance proficiency in evidence-based medicine.
International and community service opportunities are available and encouraged, as are rotations in either a rural practice or an urban community.
During this important transition to life after residency, substantial research and elective time is provided for residents to explore as well as hone their skills to prepare for their future careers.
