Chaves-Gnecco Receives International Recognition For Salud Para Niños

For over 21 years, Pitt Pediatrics clinician Diego Chaves-Gnecco, MD, MPH, FAAP, has worked tirelessly with Salud Para Niños, a bilingual pediatric health clinic he founded in 2002, to address the healthcare gap present among the often neglected Latino community in Western Pennsylvania. Since its founding, Salud Para Niños (Health for the Children) has expanded to locations across the city of Pittsburgh, including Oakland, Beechview, and the South Side.

Chaves-Gnecco’s efforts have earned him enormous honor among the community, and earlier this summer, Mayor Ed Gainey officially declared June 27, 2023 as Dr. Diego Chaves-Gnecco Day for the city of Pittsburgh.

Since then, Chaves-Gnecco has earned even more recognition for his work in creating a safe and welcoming healthcare environment for the Latino community of Pittsburgh. Alongside Erika Friehling, MD, Chaves-Gnecco was named among the 2023 Castle Conolly Top Hispanic and Latino Doctors. This incredibly competitive award was given to only 234 Hispanic/Latino doctors around the country in a peer-nominated process.

But even more recently than that, Chaves-Gnecco received recognition from his alma mater, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, during the 60th year anniversary of their pediatrics department. During the celebration, Chaves-Gnecco was given the opportunity, as one of three international speakers, to present on Salud Para Niños and his experience with the program. Following his presentation, he was awarded with a plaque that read, “In recognition and in gratitude to Diego Chaves-Gnecco for his social commitment and contributions to the fields of community health and childhood development.”
