Choi Appointed Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs

Sylvia Choi, MD, FAAPPITTSBURGH (April 28, 2021) - Pitt Pediatrics congratulates Sylvia Choi, MD, FAAP, on her appointment as Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs.

Choi is an associate professor of pediatrics in the Paul C. Gaffney Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She graduated from Boston University School of Medicine and completed her pediatrics residency and chief residency at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She joined the Department of Pediatrics in 1999 to establish the Limited Stay Unit.

Choi is a board-certified pediatric hospitalist, although she has spent years providing outpatient care and diagnostic evaluations in the Diagnostic Referral Clinic and the Feeding and Swallowing Center. She has experience teaching communication skills, was previously co-director for several CME events at Children's, and has presented workshops at national meetings on responding to prejudice. Choi has mentored residents and faculty, volunteers for the Physicians for Physicians program, and will be the president of the Professional Staff at Children's Hospital starting in July 2021.

In the role of Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, Choi will work closely with the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and the Office of Faculty Development, directed by Erika Friehling and staffed by Maren Lunoe, Rick Saladino, and Melissa Tavarez, to promote faculty development and well-being. She will partner with Children's Hospital, the School of Medicine, and other Vice Chairs to ensure that faculty are receiving appropriate support and opportunities to grow and succeed.

Choi will begin her work as Vice Chair on May 1, 2021 following the retirement of Dena Hofkosh, MD, MEd, the former Vice Chair of Faculty Development.
