Comunale Appointed Executive Administrator III for Pitt Pediatrics, UPP Pediatrics, and UPMC Children's Ambulatory Services

Michael J. Comunale, MBACongratulations to Michael J. Comunale, MBA on his new appointment as executive administrator III for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics; University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP) Department of Pediatrics; and UPMC Children’s Ambulatory Services.

Mike brings more than 18 years of progressive leadership experience to his new position. He has health care industry experience in diverse settings, spanning service divisions, full-service academic hospitals, practices and outpatient centers; and he has demonstrated success in identifying opportunities for improvement and delivering best practices to maximize access, growth, and financial and operational performance. His current responsibilities include operational leadership of the Department of Pediatrics clinical practice at the hospital, as well as 10 ancillary and regional sites with 400 staff and 450 physicians and advanced practice providers. He has enhanced operational efficiency and financial performance, driving innovation into practice and facilitating clinical integration and growth. Mike is adept at building relationships with multidisciplinary partners, collaborating across the organization, promoting a culture of excellence, and advancing the institutional mission.

In his new role, Mike will provide executive leadership for UPP and Pitt Pediatrics, comprising 19 divisions, four centers, and three interdisciplinary institutes to further advance health care for children and adolescents by integrating outstanding patient care, innovative educational programs, and cutting-edge research. He will continue executive oversight of UPMC Children’s Ambulatory Services located on the Lawrenceville campus, satellite locations, and outreach areas, and he will be a member of the UPMC Children’s Hospital Executive Management Group.

Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in Business Administration/Health Care Management from the University of Phoenix. He also completed the highly selective, executive-level UPMC Leadership Development Intensive program in 2018.  

Mike will assume his new responsibilities on Monday, February 1, 2021.
