Pitt Pediatrics congratulates assistant professor Timothy W. Hand, PhD, on his recognition as a 2021 "Investigator in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease" by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
This award provides $500,000 in support of faculty investigators at the assistant professor level to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the interplay between human and microbial biology. Hand's research focuses on immune cells of the intestine and how they respond to the first interactions with colonizing microorganisms.
In addition to service in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Hand is director of the Gnotobiotic Animal Core Laboratory and scholar at the Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research.
