Hooven Awarded R01 From NIH

Pitt Pediatrics congratulates Thomas Hooven, MD, for his first R01 award from the NIH.

The award was given for his project “Group B Streptococcus surface determinants of neonatal intestinal colonization and infection” which was a collaborative project with Tara Randis, MD, from the University of South Florida.

Group B Streptococcus is one of the most common causes of invasive bacterial infections during the newborn period, contributing to serious adverse outcomes such as sepsis with organ failure, meningitis and brain injury, and death. This project was done in an effort to understand group B Streptococcus surface factors that influence binding to and invasion of neonatal intestinal epithelial cells.
