Maurer Accepted As Fellow Of American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine

Congratulations to Scott Maurer, MD, for recently being accepted as a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM). Maurer is the Director of the Division of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care within our Department of Pediatrics, as well as the Medical Director of the Supportive Care Program at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. 

The process to becoming a fellow of the AAHPM is competitive, and requires applicants to have significant expertise, commitment to scholarship, and practice in the field, as well as to demonstrate impact with academic, service, and educational efforts. Being designated as a fellow is one of the highest honors the AAHPM can bestow on a participating member. 

As a fellow, Maurer will be to take leadership positions within the AAHPM, and participate with various communities, mentoring opportunities, and other initiatives. The AAHPM is the leading national professional organization for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers specializing in hospice and palliative medicine. The core mission of the organization is to advance hospice and palliative medicine through enhanced learning, cultivating knowledge and innovation, strengthening workforce and advocating for public policy. 

Maurer received his medical degree from Oregon Health and Science University and completed his pediatrics training at the University of Washington - Seattle Children’s Hospital. He received his fellowship training in pediatric hematology-oncology and palliative medicine at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 

Here at our Department of Pediatrics, Maurer oversees a busy pediatric palliative care service and co-created a perinatal palliative care program. He teaches and mentors faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students in clinical medicine and research. His research interests include decision making support for children with incurable cancer, allowing children to self-report their tolerance of chemotherapy, improving resilience in children with serious illness, exploring spirituality concerns in children with life-limiting illness, and improvements in bereavement support.
