Maurer Receives K08 Grant From The NIH

Pitt Pediatrics congratulates Lisa Maurer, MD, PhD, on her recent awarding of a K08 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her project, titled, “BCL10-MALT1 protein-protein interaction in lymphocyte function and dysfunction,” will receive 5 years of support from the NIH, designed to foster significant research and development in the field of lymphocyte biology, as well as to establish a firm foundation for early career development. Maurer is a physician-scientist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hematology-Oncology.

With this particular research endeavor, Maurer hopes to advance the understanding of how the interaction between BCL10 and MALT1 influences lymphocyte function and dysfunction. This career development grant will help foster new knowledge and insights into how these two critically important lymphocyte signaling proteins can influence immune disorders such as psoriasis and colitis. Ultimately, designed experiments will aim to determine the therapeutic potential of targeting the BCL10-MALT1 interactions as a way to treat these inflammatory disorders.

Maurer’s proposed experiments plan to utilize sophisticated biochemistry techniques, as well as in vitro analyses, in vivo models of inflammatory disease, and detailed bioinformatic analyses. Key collaborators and mentors have also been established, thereby ensuring progressive development in the scientific efforts of the project.

Our Department excitedly looks forward to the outcomes of this important work and the career growth of Maurer over the coming years.
