May Recognized With 2024 Ilene Beal Courageous Provider Award

Please join us in congratulating Carol May, RN, MSN, MBA, CHPPN, for being selected as one of the 2024 Ilene Beal Courageous Provider Award winners! This prestigious recognition is awarded every year from the Courageous Parents Network, a renowned national palliative care organization that provides support and resources to parents and others caring for children with serious medical conditions. The Ilene Beal award celebrates individuals or teams advancing the impact of pediatric palliative care through their work and collaboration with others.

May is the Director of the Division of Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. In her nomination, she was credited with building and expanding the palliative care team into a recognized department at Children’s Hospital, and was described as “everyone’s (families, trainees, attending physicians, nurses, social workers, and child-life specialists) first call when patients and their families need support.”

In recognizing May with this award, the selection committee associated her “innate compassion and mission to minimize patient and families’ suffering and maximize their quality of life” with the interests and values of Ilene Beal.

This award is a enormous accomplishment, and Pitt Pediatrics is proud to celebrate May's achievement.

The Division of Palliative Care is the Department of Pediatrics’ newest division, and we are excited to be a part of this incredible team of clinicians and providers.
