Muzumdar Receives NIH R01 Award to Support Cardiovascular Research

Radhika H. Muzumdar, MDPitt Pediatrics congratulates Radhika H. Muzumdar, MD, professor of pediatrics and cell biology, and director of the Division of Endocrinology, on her receipt of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 award titled "Cardioprotective role of Humanin in aging."

This grant will support Muzumdar's research of humanin (HN), a novel small peptide generated by mitochondria.  She aims to investigate how HN treatment can improve cardiac function in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI-R) injury or MI-induced heart failure.  This research may lead to major improvements in the treatment of cardiovascular diseaes.

Muzumdar is joined by Pitt Pediatrics colleagues Eric S. Goetzman, PhD, and Zhenwei Gong, PhD, as well as coprincipal investigator Partha Dutta, DVM, PhD, associate professor in Pitt's Department of Medicine.
