Raghu Awarded NASPGHAN Research Grant

Pitt Pediatrics congratulates Vikram Raghu, MD, MS, for recently receiving a one-year research grant from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) Foundation. Raghu is a clinical instructor of pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, and completed his fellowship, residency, and medical school education at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Raghu’s research interests include developing and implementing innovative methods to improve the value of care provided to patients with gastrointestinal disease, with a special focus on intestinal rehabilitation, intestinal failure, and intestinal transplantation. His primary work involves using cost-effectiveness analysis to evaluate interventions in pediatric intestinal rehabilitation and transplantation under the mentorship of Kenneth Smith, MD, MS.

Formally titled the NASPGHAN Foundation/Alcresta Research Award for the Study of Pediatric Pancreatic Disease and Malabsorption for Fellows and Junior Faculty, this award will allow Raghu to expand his recruitment efforts in collecting health utility data in pediatric intestinal failure and transplant. The goal is to help determine the effects different interventions have on patients in both length and ongoing quality of life.

Raghu also aims to specifically support translation services for his qualitative work to better understand the unique needs of the Latinx population, given that many families come from Puerto Rico and elsewhere for intestine transplant evaluation.
