Retirement Announcement for Sara McIntire

Pitt Pediatrics congratulates and wishes Sara McIntire, MD, FAAP, a very happy retirement. Benjamin Miller, MD, Division Director, Paul C. Gaffney Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, wrote an entry on behalf of McIntire:

Dr. Sara McIntire, an esteemed member of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics, will retire from clinical practice on June 30, 2022, after 32 years of service at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. McIntire joined the Paul C. Gaffney Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (previously known as the Paul C. Gaffney Diagnostic Referral Service) as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 1990 and has since earned promotion to Associate Professor (1997) and Professor (2006).

Dr. McIntire has served as a medical education leader and innovator in several positions. For the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM), she spent a decade as the overall Director of Pediatric Medical Student Education. She directed the Pediatrics Inpatient Clerkship, the Advanced Inpatient Pediatrics Elective, and served as an Advisory Dean of Students. As a recognition of these many efforts, Dr. McIntire was inducted into the UPSOM Academy of Master educators in 2006. She chaired the Continuing Medical Education Committee for UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for over a decade, and for eight years she served as Co-Director of the Three Rivers Educational Conference, which provides education for pediatricians throughout our region. Perhaps most influentially, she has served as Associate Editor for the sixth and seventh edition and Co-Editor of the eighth edition of the Zitelli and Davis’ Atlas of Pediatric Physical Diagnosis. This ground-breaking book is the third-highest selling textbook in the history of pediatrics, and it has been translated into 9 languages. It has become an essential companion for all trainees and practitioners in pediatrics.

Finally, Dr. McIntire is the recipient of numerous awards for her service and contributions to education and clinical care. She twice won the Faculty Recognition Award for Medical Student Teaching. She received the Howard A. Mermelstein MD Award for Excellence in Pediatrics as well as the UPSOM Kenneth E. Schuit Award, which “recognizes basic science and clinical faculty for education-related contributions to the Pitt Med Curriculum.” Finally, she received the inaugural Dena Hofkosh Eudaimonia Award in June 2022.

Dr. Sara McIntire has touched the lives of countless patients and trainees throughout her career. Her influence through this direct contact and through dissemination of her work via the Atlas surely spans the globe. She is simply one of the best educators and clinicians in the history of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Pediatrics.
