Williams and Dermody Discuss COVID-19 Challenges, Worldwide Variants

John V. Williams, MDWhat an awful year we have been through. The loss of life and economic suffering caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have been enormous and heartbreaking. As a consequence of COVID-19, more than 500,000 Americans have died, including people close to many of us. Children have lost substantial time in school with unknown effects on future learning. There can be no doubt that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is dangerous. The distribution of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines offers real hope that we can bring this pandemic to a close. But we still have work to do.

On April 21, Terence S. Dermody, MD, Vira I. Heinz Distingushed Professor and Chair of Pediatrics coauthored a statement with John V. Williams, MD, Henry L. Hillman Professor of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Infectious Diseases, discussing ongoing COVID-19 mitigation efforts.

Williams also serves as director of the University of Pittsburgh's COVID-19 Medical Response Office.
