Yu, Houtrow Publish Paper Highlighting Underinsurance Among U.S. Children

Justin A. Yu, MD, MS (Credit: UPMC Digital Marketing)Pitt Pediatrics congratulates assistant professor Justin A. Yu, MD, MS, of the Paul C. Gaffney Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, on the publication of an article in Pediatrics highlighting underinsurance among children in the United States from 2016 to 2019.

Yu highlights how the proportion of children in the United States experiencing underinsurance rose from 30.6 percent to 34 percent, comprising an increase of 2.4 million children. The increase was found to be driven largely by rising insurance inadequacy and unreasonable out-of-pocket expenses.  Large increases in underinsured children were observed in White and multiracial children, those living in households with income greater than or equal to 200% of the federal poverty limit, and those using private health insurance plans.

This article was prepared in collaboration with professor Amy Joy Houtrow, MD, PhD, MPH, Vice Chair for Quality and Vice Chair for Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at Pitt's Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.  Other authors include James M. Perrin, MD, of the Harvard Medical School, Department of Pediatrics; and Thomas Hagerman, MD, of the Henry Ford Health System, Department of Emergency Medicine.
