Having already been shown to be effective in other countries, we are currently adapting this program for the US. Manhood 2.0 is aimed at reducing sexual violence and adolescent relationship abuse, giving teens a place to share what masculinity means to them and what their ideal version of “being a man” entails. Participants discuss gender messages, how to handle and express their emotions, how to have healthy relationships, and how to make healthy sexual decisions.

Unlike similar programs, Manhood 2.0 is focused on delivering the program through community members. The discussions are not facilitated by researchers or university staff, but rather through respected members of the community, like teachers, pastors, and positive neighbors. Here at AYA, we’re dedicated to promoting gender-equitable attitudes and increasing bystander intervention, and we believe that by engaging youth in conversation with people they admire, we will give them the skills and confidence to be leaders against violence, and the willingness to speak up for those who need it.
