Andrew Buchert is the Medical Director for Clinical Resource Management at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.  In this role, Buchert oversees the development, implementation, and measurement of clinical pathways for pediatric conditions.  He provides direction to identify opportunities for pathways that will have high clinical, quality, and economic impact, that are innovative, and that advance UPMC Children’s mission and priorities.  Buchert also leads hospital-level patient safety and QI projects at Children’s including through partnerships with the Healthcare Policy and Management graduate program in the H. John Heinz III College of Carnegie Mellon University and the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, as well as through national collaborations including Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety.  Buchert also serves as a Physician Advisor for Children’s Hospital performing insurance denial mitigation and other utilization review functions.

As an Associate Medical Director of the Wolff Center for Quality, Safety, and Innovation of UPMC, and the Director for Patient Safety and Quality Improvement for UPMC Medical Education, Buchert leads the patient safety and QI educational mission of UPMC Graduate Medical Education, specifically the integration of graduate medical trainees at all UPMC training programs and hospitals into the system-wide patient safety and QI efforts of UPMC.  UPMC is one of the largest GME training programs in the country, with more than 1700 residents and fellows in over 130 accredited training programs at 12 hospitals.

Buchert is a pediatric hospitalist at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  He earned his medical doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at Children's of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
