Burhan Mahmood, MD, FAAP

Mahmood has keen interest in research presenting multiple basic science projects at scientific meetings during early part of his career. With a more clinical focus subsequently, he spear-headed several IRB-approved clinical research projects in collaboration with other divisions within the Department of Pediatrics at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh with the findings from these research endeavors presented at national and international meetings. He has been co-investigator in several other IRB-approved multi-center clinical studies. With expertise in clinical care of premature and critically ill neonates, Mahmood actively participates in quality improvement initiatives for the Division of Newborn Medicine to help improve patient outcomes. 

As Medical Director of Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Mahmood’s current research interest are in area of Neonatal ECMO Support, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Management, Neonatal Cardio-respiratory Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension. He represents UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine nationally at the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Consortium (CHNC) Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and ECMO Focus Groups where he collaborates with representatives from CHNC centers to better understand disease process and clinical management practices to help standardize care and improve patient outcomes. 

Mahmood serves as a mentor for the Pediatric Residency Bridges Mentoring Program at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Neonatology Fellowship Mentoring Program for the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine. He also serves as mentor for the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Faculty Mentorship Program for the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine. Mahmood directs the Neonatal ECMO Curriculum for the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine including the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Advanced ECMO Training Program for the neonatology fellows. He also conducts the Neonatal Transition Curriculum for the Reproductive and Developmental Biology Course. University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Mahmood is involved with many other educational activities within the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine and serves as Regional Trainer and Instructor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program at University of Pittsburgh.
