Briana Bertoni, MD, MBOE, CPPS

C. Briana Bertoni, MD, MBOE is a neonatologist and advocate for patient safety. She earned her medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University and a Masters of Business Operational Excellence from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. Bertoni completed her Pediatric Residency at Thomas Jefferson University/ Nemours A.I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware. She completed both a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and a Clinical Fellowship in Quality and Safety Leadership at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Bertoni completed Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) certification through The Ohio State University and is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). Bertoni joined the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine in August 2021 as the Director of Clinical Development and Quality Improvement and attending physician, as well as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Prior to joining UPMC, Bertoni participated in and led a number of quality improvement projects both at the division and hospital level working on elimination of medication errors, central-line associated blood stream infections, unplanned extubations, and pressure injuries, among others and has taught quality improvement methodology at the hospital level. Bertoni is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and also is currently a member of the AAP Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Her research interests include optimization of neonatal outcomes and enhancing neonatal patient safety through the utilization of quality improvement science.
