Jenny Ruiz, MD, MSCE

Dr. Jenny Ruiz is an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and an attending physician in pediatric hematology-oncology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She earned her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as a C.P. Davis Scholar. Additionally, she earned her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her pediatrics residency training at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital before moving to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for her hematology-oncology fellowship.

As a physician-scientist her research focuses on investigating social determinants of health as it relates to pediatric cancer outcomes. Ongoing projects include investigating infectious complications in children with leukemia, clinical trial enrollment disparities, and how parental language impacts care of children with cancer. Her future research will focus on parent-provider communication with families who speak a language other than English. Dr. Ruiz has been funded by a NCI T32 Oncology Epidemiology grant, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Young Investigator Grant, a Conquer Cancer of ASCO Young Investigator Award, a Children’s Oncology Group – Children’s Cancer Research Foundation Minority Young Investigator Award, and the Abramson Cancer Center’s Paul Calabresi Career Development Award for Clinical Oncology K12 grant. 

Dr. Ruiz has a long-standing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. She was a mentor and advisor through the National Hispanic Medical Association-Latino Medical Student Association medical school liaison program. She was a previous executive board member of the CHOP/UPHS Alliance of Minority Physicians. She serves as a mentor through the American Society of Clinical Oncology Diversity Mentoring Program. She also is a member of the American Society of Hematology Minority Recruitment Initiative and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Diversity in Oncology subcommittee, and a member of the Children’s Oncology Diversity and Health Disparities working group.
