With the age of death from CF increasing from 20’s to 40’s, up to 30% of Cystic Fibrosis patients develop cystic fibrosis-associated liver disease (CFLD). GWAS studies haven’t found a driver mutation associated with CFLD. Clinical features appear late and are related to damage of the hepatobiliary system. 

Our work is focused on the biliary epithelial cells known as cholangiocytes and how damage to the cholangiocytes leads to CFLD. Is progession to CFLD due to an inflammatory response leading to portal vein fibrosis, mutation burden, microbial environment within the liver altering bile composition, or possibly an aberrant post-translational modification in patients that leads to CFLD?
