Michael J. Comunale is the Executive Administrator for the Department of Pediatrics and Ambulatory Services at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, a role that he assumed in 2018. Previously, he held the role of Executive Director within the Department, where he was responsible for designing and instituting business and program planning to advance clinical department and organizational initiatives.

As Executive Administrator II, he is responsible for operational leadership of the Department of Pediatrics clinical practice at the hospital, as well as 10 ancillary and regional sites with a staff of over 400 and 450 Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers. Michael is accountable to enhancing operational efficiency and financial performance, driving innovation into practice and facilitating clinical integration and growth.

Throughout his 17+ years at UPMC, Michael has held a variety of positions including Associate Director of Health Information Management, Director of Telemedicine and Division Administrator. He has progressive industry experience in diverse settings, spanning service divisions, full-service academic hospitals, practices and outpatient centers, and has demonstrated success in identifying opportunities for improvement and delivering best practices/innovative solutions which maximize service growth and streamline operational performance. Michael is adept at building critical relationships with multidisciplinary partners, collaborating across the enterprise, promoting a culture of excellence, and advancing the organizational mission.

Michael holds a Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Master of Business Administration/Health Care Management degree from the University of Phoenix. He also holds a certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), and was nominated and completed the highly selective, executive-level UPMC Leadership Development Intensive (LDI) program in 2018.
