Michael J. Comunale, MBA, is the vice president, UPMC Pediatric Service Line, and the executive administrator, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP).

As vice president, Mr. Comunale has oversite of strategic growth, market expansion, the comprehensive ambulatory network, and pediatric service line integration across the UPMC Health System.

In his role as executive administrator, he provides executive leadership for the Department of Pediatrics, comprising 19 divisions, four centers, and three interdisciplinary institutes to further advance health care for children and adolescents by integrating outstanding patient care, innovative educational programs, and cutting-edge research.

Mr. Comunale has 20 years of progressive healthcare experience in diverse settings spanning physician practices, service lines, outpatient centers, and research in an academic medical center.  He has received national attention as the primary author on two publications: “Consumer Centric Approach to Enhance Access to Pediatric Specialty Care” in the American Journal of Managed Care and “Integrating Advanced Practice Providers into value-based care strategies: One organization's journey to achieve success through interprofessional collaboration" in the Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice.

Prior to his role as vice president, he held several key leadership roles including executive director within the Department of Pediatrics, director of Health Information Management, director of Telehealth and division administrator.

Mr. Comunale holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in Business Administration/Health Care Management from the University of Phoenix. He also completed the highly selective, executive-level UPMC Leadership Development Intensive program in 2018.
