Health Insurance

A UPMC AdvantageGold 90-10 EPO health insurance and vision insurance plan are fully paid by UPMC Medical Education for residents, fellows, and their dependents.

Dental Insurance

United Concordia and UPMC Dental both offer a Premium and Standard PPO.  The premium for Standard PPO (individual coverage) is paid by UPMC.  All other coverage levels have UPMC and the resident physician sharing the premium cost.


Three weeks vacation are provided for PL-1s (divided into one-week and two-week blocks). Three weeks of vacation are provided for PL-2s and PL-3s. More flexibility is available.

Residents may request vacation days during non-call rotations in the length of their choice. Vacation requests are subject to approval by the chief residents.


Covered parking attached to the main hospital is available at the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh campus for a small fee.

Life Insurance

Coverage is provided $1,000 above the annual stipend and includes Accidental Death and Dismemberment.

Maternity Leave

Six or eight weeks paid leave of absence is provided. Additional vacation time is discussed on an individual basis.

Disability Insurance

Paid short-term disability of up to 26 weeks of complete disability is provided. The trainee must provide/complete required documentation with Work Partners and be under the care of a physician.  Long-term disability insurance coverage also is provided.

Professional Liability Insurance

Coverage is provided in accordance with Commonwealth of Pennsylvania mandated levels by Tri-Century Insurance.
