Clinical Activities

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is consistently recognized as one of America's premiere children's hospitals by U.S. News; our Division of Pediatric Endocrinology ranks second best amongst all those that offer diabetes & endocrinology services. We are responsible for a diverse clinical spectrum of approximately 18,500 endocrine and 9,600 diabetes patient visits per year to the outpatient Diabetes Center. Fellows are integral to assisting with the diagnosis and treatment of patients in our 3 clinical services: inpatient diabetes and endocrine service, inpatient endocrine consult service, and outpatient clinical services.

1

The Inpatient Diabetes and Endocrine service cares for patients with primary endocrine problems who require inpatient hospitalization. Fellows assist the assigned inpatient faculty clinician to diagnose and treat children with newly diagnosed diabetes, diabetic emergencies, hypoglycemia, adrenal insufficiency/crisis, and the evaluation / management of diabetes insipidus. Fellows work closely with the attending physician, resident team, and other members of the diabetes team such as nurse educators, dietitians, social workers, and advanced practice providers to execute the best care for these inpatient pediatric patients.

2

The Endocrine Consult Service provides care for patients with a variety of endocrine disorders who are in the emergency department and/ or who are admitted to inpatient medical services, Transplant Service, NICU, and PICU. During this service, fellows encounter a wide range of both common and rare medical cases while executing collaborative patient care with multiple subspeciality teams.

3

During Outpatient Clinic service, fellows see patients in their Endocrine and Diabetes Continuity Clinics under direct supervision of our faculty physicians. Fellows also rotate through general endocrine clinic as well as our multiple endocrine subspecialty clinics that include: Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, Differences of Sex Development, Metabolic Bone Disease, CFRD, Prader Willi, Cancer Survivorship, Thyroid Disorders, PCOS, and Lipid Clinics.
