Clinical Operations

The division has a large clinical footprint with outpatient clinics extending from Harrisburg to Erie, extensive inpatient services, the Child Development Unit, a comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Epilepsy Surgery program, the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, the Pediatric Electroencephalography (EEG) Laboratory serving multiple regional hospitals and the Electromyography (EMG) Laboratory.  

The division has 18,000 outpatient visits per year and performs 900 inpatient and 800 ED consults per year. The electroencephalography lab performs 3000 inpatient EEGs, 2000 outpatient EEGs, 2662 prolonged video EEGs and 300 ambulatory EEGs per year.  EEGs are performed and monitored at multiple outreach sites including UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, UPMC Hamot, West Penn Hospital, UPMC Northwest Hospital, UPMC Jameson Hospital, UPMC Western Maryland, and UPMC Susquehanna.  The EMG lab performs 150 studies per year.  The epilepsy surgery program performs a variety of resection procedures, laser ablation and VNS and RNS placements.

The division has specialized programs in epilepsy, headache, pseudotumor cerebri, ketogenic diet, metabolic and mitochondrial disease, tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis, Fragile X syndrome, neuro-genetics, Tourette’s syndrome and movement disorders, autoimmune CNS disease, stroke, neonatal neurology, muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular disease. We are one of seven national centers with a program in neurodevelopmental disabilities and have a specialized center for developmental disabilities and autism.
