Burhan Mahmood, MD, FAAP
- Professor of Pediatrics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
- Medical Director, Newborn Medicine ECMO Program, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh
- Director, Newborn Medicine CDH Program, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh
Dr. Mahmood serves as the Medical Director of the Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) Programs at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He directs the Neonatal ECMO Curriculum for the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine that encompasses wet labs, monthly conferences, ECMO simulation, equipment reviews, quality improvement initiatives, research and QI projects, didactic sessions and ECMO patient case reviews. He also directs the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Advanced ECMO Training Program for the neonatology fellows, initiated in 2019. Dr. Mahmood is involved with many other educational activities within the UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine and serves as Instructor Mentor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program at University of Pittsburgh. He also conducts the Neonatal Transition Curriculum for the Reproductive and Developmental Biology Course at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Mahmood has keen interest in research, presenting multiple basic science projects at scientific meetings during early part of his career. Thereafter he initiated several IRB-approved clinical research projects in collaboration with other divisions within the department of pediatrics that were presented at scientific meetings. Dr. Mahmood has provided research mentorship to several neonatology fellows for their clinical research and QI projects with their work published and presented at national and international meetings. He has also participated as co-investigator in several other IRB-approved multi-center studies.
Dr. Mahmood’s primary research interest is in the area of Neonatal ECMO Support, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Management and Neonatal Cardio-respiratory Failure to better understand the nuances of disease process with goal to improve outcomes and patient care. For this end, he represents UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh nationally at the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Consortium (CHNC) Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and ECMO focus groups. In collaboration with representatives from other CHNC centers these groups utilize Children’s Hospitals Neonatal Database (CHND) to better understand disease process, inter-center variations in clinical management practices and overall patient outcomes to help standardize care. Nationally, Dr. Mahmood continues to actively participate in both the CHNC focus groups, leading as well as collaborating in multiple research projects that have been published and presented as scientific meetings. He serves as Scientific Reviewer for the Clinical Investigation Committee within UPMC Division of Newborn Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He was appointed as member of the Society for Pediatric Researchin 2023.
