Brian T. Campfield, MD

  • Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
  • Scholar, Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research

Brian T. Campfield joined the division as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 2014, providing subspecialty patient care and conducting research investigating the role of follistatin-like protein 1 (FSTL-1) in host defense and homeostasis in the lung, with a focus on innate immune responses and their impact on adaptive immunity. His lab employs multiple approaches including in vitro and in vivo animal models of sterile inflammation as well as bacterial pneumonia and viral infection. His lab is supported by funding from the NIH, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Campfield is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his Pediatrics residency and Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC/University of Pittsburgh.

As a clinical subspecialist in Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Campfield provides care for inpatients and outpatients with a wide variety of complex infectious disease issues. His areas of interest include diagnosis and care of infectious complications in immunocompromised patients, including primary immunodeficiency and organ transplant recipients, patients with critical illnesses due to infectious diseases as well as children with Lyme disease.
