The Division of Emergency Medicine is responsible for the evaluation and management of nearly 85,000 children visiting the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Emergency Department each year. These children present from across western and central Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and western Maryland.  Acute and chronic problems of all levels of severity, including acute illnesses, exacerbations of chronic problems and all types of injuries are managed by the faculty and staff. Children’s Emergency Department has been designated as the region’s only Level 1 (highest level) Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center. 

Many faculty and staff are involved in academic and research activities and the division is part of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Network/Great Lakes Emergency Medical Services for Children Research Network.  Many of the providers in the Division staff UPMC CHP Anywhere Care UPMC Anywhere Care, a direct to consumer pediatric virtual urgent care service implemented by the Division of Emergency Medicine.  

In addition, many also staff Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department Observation Unit, an inpatient unit designed to care for children who may only require a short inpatient length of stay. 

Our Mission

The mission of the Division of Emergency Medicine is to deliver the highest quality care to children with acute illnesses and injuries, provide excellence in service to our patients and referring physicians, provide education to trainees of all levels and to engage in discovery in order to advance the field of pediatric emergency medicine.
