  • Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine
  • Assistant Director, Palliative Research Center (PaRC)

Justin Yu is a physician-scientist and board certified in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine. He works with the Supportive Care team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He also serves as Assistant Director of Pitt's Palliative Research Center.

Dr. Yu's research focuses on improving the health and well-being of children with medical complexity (CMC) and their family caregivers through pediatric palliative care interventions. Currently, he is conducting a randomized controlled pilot trial of a novel psychological intervention for CMC family caregivers with support from a K23 career development award through the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). This intervention, which integrates components of meaning-centered psychotherapy and problem-solving skills training, is the first behavioral intervention specifically designed for CMC family caregivers. Additionally, Dr. Yu is running a prospective longitudinal study of CMC and their families that seeks to better describe how CMC health and symptoms, caregiver well-being, and child healthcare utilization naturally fluctuate over time.
