- Welcome from the 5/6 Year Residents!
-
Thank you for taking the opportunity to learn more about our program. While we may not be able to meet all of you in-person, our goal is to give you some insight into what makes our training stand out among other combined CN/NDD residencies and fellowships.
Our training at UPMC begins in general pediatrics, where you will have the opportunity to hone your skills as a pediatrician and build relationships with your pediatric colleagues. You'll build a strong foundation of pediatric medicine in these first 2 years of training, but the door is open to any and all events and conferences in the Child Neurology department from our weekly radiology rounds to our spur of the moment social events. Every CN/NDD resident is assigned a faculty mentor in their respective department from the start. Of course we (the current fellows) are more than happy to act as an extra resource for mentorship and support. You'll start your journey as a neurologist during year 3 as a member of the UPMC Adult Neurology Residency where you'll experience the entire scope of neurology, learn to diagnose and manage neurologic disease, and become more confident in the neurologic exam. The majority of the time you will be learning core principles of neurology in an adult hospital, but rest assured that your once weekly child neurology continuity clinics and didactics certainly prepare you for your time as a fellow. You will be extremely well-prepared by the time you reach your 4th and 5th (and 6th for our NDD friends!) years of training, so you can really focus in on developing your skills in Child Neurology. Whether you feel you are more clinical or research oriented, our faculty has representatives from nearly all subspecialties of neurology who can help you explore your individual interests and career development. We are encouraged to engage in conferences, research, and specialty clinic shadowing, as this is an important part in our journey as child neurologists.
One of our favorite things about our department is the camaraderie between individuals of all levels of training. Our department works on a first name basis (department chairs included) and our collegial culture allows for an open door policy. Need a neuro-genetics consult? They are 3 offices down and happy to help! Our department hosts a variety of gatherings and spur of the moment events outside of the hospital to get to know each other in a more relaxed environment.
We work hard to give a high level of care to our patients but make time to explore the many things that Pittsburgh has to offer. Whether you like sports, the performing arts, history, food festivals, outdoor adventuring, or all the above-this medium sized metro area will never bore you. Whatever your personal interests and career goals, we are confident that you can make Pittsburgh a home that allows you to flourish.
We look forward to meeting you this year, and please contact us if you have any questions. Check out our Instagram to stay up to date on open houses and a behind the scenes look at our day to day lives (@chpchildneuro).
Sincerely,
Katsiah, Nick, Sushma, Rochita, and John
