Ruiz Selected To 2024-25 Women's Wellbeing Through Equity And Leadership Program

Pitt Pediatrics is proud to announce that Jenny Ruiz, MD, MSCE, has been selected to participate in the 2024-2025 Women’s Wellbeing through Equity and Leadership (WEL) program. Ruiz is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hematology-Oncology whose research focuses on the social determinants of health as it relates to pediatric cancer outcomes.

The WEL program is built on a consortium of 10 national medical associations and is a 15-month program that provides networking and education around critical leadership to early- to mid-career women physicians. The WEL has been led by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and is funded by the Physicians Foundation.

Started in 2018 with a partnership of six organizations, the program has since expanded remarkably and continues to aim towards changing the culture of medicine in which women physicians can face discrimination, salary inequities, and structural barriers to success.

As a WEL scholar, Ruiz will represent the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA). The NHMA is a national organization representing 50,000 licensed Hispanic physicians across the country, and is also one of the sponsoring medical associations for the WEL.

Ruiz earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from Columbia University, as well as a Master’s of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) from the University of Pennsylvania. Her residency training took place at Columbia University Medical Center, and her hematology-oncology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Ruiz has been funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Conquer Cancer of ASCO, Children’s Oncology Group, and the Abramson Cancer Center’s Paul Calabresi Career Development Award for Clinical Oncology.

Join us in congratulating Ruiz on this wonderful accomplishment!
