Rudolph Named Interim Division Director for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition

A Leadership Announcement from the Chair of Pediatrics

All,

I am writing to share the news that Dr. Andrew (Drew) Feranchak will resign his position as Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and retire from the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Children’s Hospital on January 31, 2024.

Dr. Feranchak is an internationally recognized investigator in the area of cholestatic liver disease. He was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Children’s Hospital in 2017 as Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. He has led an outstanding division with national experts in clinical care and research throughout the gastroenterology domain. In recognition of his leadership, Dr. Feranchak was awarded the Carol Ann Craumer Endowed Chair for Pediatric Research. Prior to his arrival in Pittsburgh, Dr. Feranchak was Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

In addition to his administrative and clinical roles, Dr. Feranchak directs a basic and translational research laboratory focused on an understanding of mechanisms of bile formation, which may serve as the basis for therapeutic strategies for the treatment of cholestatic liver disorders. He has published numerous important papers, lectured widely on his research, and served in leadership roles with the Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), and the council of the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR).

Dr. Feranchak is especially proud to have served as a mentor for many residents, fellows, and faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and in his previous appointments.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jeff Rudolph will serve as Interim Division Director for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition beginning on February 1, 2024. I also am pleased that Drs. Jackie Ho, Director of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology, and Noel Spears, Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Pediatrics, will lead the Search Committee to identify a new Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition Division Director.

Please join me in wishing Dr. Feranchak well in his future endeavors and thanking Drs. Rudolph, Ho, and Spears for their important service.

Best,

Terry
