A team of Pitt Pediatrics faculty and researchers, together with an international consortium of colleges and institutions, found that pathogenic variants in a RNA-binding protein can lead to neurodevelopmental delays and ataxia syndrome.

No Benefit to Tubes Over Antibiotics for Ear Infections
There is no long-term benefit to surgically placing tympanostomy tubes in a young child’s ears to reduce the rate of recurrent ear infections during the ensuing two years compared with giving oral antibiotics to treat ear infections, a randomized trial led by UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh pediatrician-scientists determined.

Hooven, Keith, Gopalakrishna Publish Key Research on Group B Streptococcus Infection and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes
A team of Pitt Pediatrics researchers led by Thomas A. Hooven, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics and scholar at the Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute of Pediatric Research, found that a genetic regulator has a critical role in allowing group B Streptococcus (GBS) to enter the bloodstream and trigger adverse responses leading to preterm labor and stillbirth.
